Homeschool Gardening

Homeschool gardening

There are so many things to teach your kids when you are their primary teacher.  I have found so many lessons that come without any prep or stress just by including my little ones when I garden.  Homeschool gardening enhances most any lesson.  We’ve done lessons on physics, time, and of course math, and any number of other things!  Life Cycles, Food Chain, Conservation, etc.  Our formal school time often includes gardening ties organically because my boys just naturally think about the garden when I ask for examples of things!  We learn together how to spot signs of concern in the garden and then I include them when I am searching for solutions.  We talk a lot about what critters are natural predators to the things that are causing problems for our produce.  And then we figure out together what the best solution is to increase the predators so they can naturally decrease the things that are causing problems.  We also look at how we can use things we might otherwise throw away — like cardboard as barriers for raised beds, egg shells to add calcium, or cinnamon to keep the ants out of our beds.  We recently found out that toilet paper rolls can keep night crawlers from finding our plants – homeschool gardening!  We’re testing out that one now!  Actively involving my littles in the process of learning teaches them how to discover things for themselves, and I also use that to teach them smart search skills — after all, just because it’s posted on the internet doesn’t mean it’s true!  Most kids are fascinated with the garden.  Homeschool gardening doesn’t have to be carefully thought out.  It simply happens if you let it, and it can teach far more than one can easily put down on paper.  So let the kids get dirty with you!  Whether it’s talking about what is inside a pill they take when they are sick, or opening up a tea bag to discover the dried leaf particles that are inside, there’s a wealth of knowledge waiting to grow with you and your little ones in your garden!
